
Why Do Injuries Happen? Understanding Tissue Tolerance and Movement Variability
As a physiotherapist and calisthenics athlete, one of the most common questions I hear is:
"Why did I suddenly get injured?"
Many people assume injuries happen because a movement is "bad" or because a particular posture is "wrong." In reality, injuries are often much more complex.
One of my favourite ways to explain this is using the Cup Analogy.

Imagine every tissue in your body—your muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and bones—has a cup.
Every stress you place on that tissue adds water into the cup.
This stress can come from:
When the amount of stress exceeds the cup's capacity, the cup overflows.
When the cup overflows, symptoms often appear:
The problem isn't necessarily the last drop of water.
The problem is that the cup was already close to overflowing.
There are two major strategies.
The first strategy is to increase the capacity of the cup itself.
This is what exercise and progressive loading do.
When we gradually expose tissues to appropriate stress, they adapt:
A stronger tendon, for example, can handle more force before becoming irritated.
The cup becomes bigger.
This is one of the primary goals of rehabilitation and strength training.
We are not trying to avoid stress.
We are trying to become more capable of handling it.
The second strategy is often overlooked.
Instead of repeatedly pouring water into the exact same cup, we can spread the load across multiple cups.
This is where movement variability comes in.
Movement variability is the ability to perform tasks using slightly different strategies, positions, and movement options.
Think about reaching overhead.
Can your body:
Or does every overhead movement happen in exactly the same way?
When we have more movement options available, we distribute stress across different tissues and different parts of the body.
Rather than repeatedly overloading the same structures, the workload is shared.
In a sense, movement variability gives us more cups.
One reason I enjoy calisthenics is that it constantly encourages movement exploration.
Many people think calisthenics is simply about pull-ups, dips, and handstands.
For me, it's about discovering what the human body is capable of.
A pull-up can be performed in multiple ways.
A push-up can challenge different positions.
A hanging exercise can explore shoulder flexion, thoracic movement, rib expansion, and pelvic control.
The goal isn't to move recklessly.
The goal is to develop the ability to move in different directions and positions while remaining strong and controlled.
I enjoy finding new ways to challenge my bodyweight safely.
How can my shoulders move?
How can my ribs expand and rotate?
How can my hips shift and rotate?
How can I build strength in these positions?
Every new movement option becomes another tool available to the body.
Another cup.
It's important to understand that movement variability and tissue tolerance are partners, not competitors.
Having many movement options without strength can still leave tissues vulnerable.
Likewise, being incredibly strong in only one movement pattern can eventually overload the same tissues repeatedly.
The ideal approach is both:
A bigger cup.
More cups.
Together, they create a more adaptable and resilient body.
Injury prevention is rarely about finding the perfect posture or avoiding certain movements forever.
Instead, it's about improving the body's ability to tolerate load and giving it multiple ways to handle that load.
